Mystery Mania Brings Clever Sleuthing to the iPhone

We’ve stumbled upon a little gem of an iPhone game. Mystery Mania, adds heart to any iDevice with its deserted mansion, 27 riddle-tastic rooms, and amnesia-suffering robot. Being released on EA’s mobile site a few months ago, Mystery Mania has arrived for the iPhone and iPod touch in full finger tapping glory. You’ll have at least a couple hours of fun with this great game.

The backbone of the game is its main character F8. As a recently revived robot, F8 soon realizes he has no memory. Players must help F8 discover his past and reason for being by guiding him on a search for truth. Each room within the daunting mansion is chock full of clues that must be deciphered in order to exit to the next. Some rooms have two or more exits that lead to different areas of the house. Every room’s mystery must be solved in order to complete the game and solve F8’s puzzling past. Along the way, we found ourselves really enjoying F8 and his clueless manner. He’ll do whatever you want and go wherever you direct him, even if that means getting electrocuted, bitten by a dog, or kicked by an angry lad. F8 is up for any challenge and always displays good sportsmanship.

Mystery Mania doesn’t include much in the way of formal instructions. But this is all part of the fun. Logic is the only tool you’ll have to help F8 on his way. There are several items in each room that you must combine or activate in a prescribed order to unlock the exit. For example, you can use a candle on the wall to light a burner that’s on the table. Then have F8 mix chemicals atop the burner and watch the fun begin. It really is amusing. Truthfully, the game can be a head-scratcher at times, but we found that all rooms could be solved after a few tries. The key is to use your observation skills.

Graphically, Mystery Mania is comparable to a flash cartoon. Colors a vivid, yet the sets are rather flat feeling. Overall, there isn’t anything to write home about in the visual department. Since there isn’t spoken audio, dialogue between F8 and guest personalities are presented in sign boards reminiscent of silent films. The music incorporated into Mystery Mania is eerie and fits the entire tone of the game perfectly. If interrupted by a phone call or otherwise quit, the game will save your progress and resume where you left off upon the next launch.

If you like games that will stump, surprise, and gratify you, give Mystery Mania a whirl. All the ingredients of a classic crime drama are neatly packaged into the game. Currently, EA is offering the game for $3.99 on the App Store. The only complaint we have about it is that its over rather quickly. We’d love to see EA throw in more levels in a update. But as it is, Mystery Mania is one who-done-it that will leave you wanting more.
